Mary Kay Gel Semi-Matte Lipstick & No, My Lips Are Sealed Lipstick Topcoat | Review & Swatches

Hey everyone! I featured both of these lip products in my Chick Advisor Spring Cleaning Event Haul blog post. I wanted to give these products a fair shot and thought I could do a review on each item in one blog post.

I somehow forgot, but I did try a few Mary Kay lipstick samples in the past and I actually own another lipstick formula by the brand. This is the first time that I'm trying out the gel semi-matte lipstick range. I absolutely love mauve shades and liked that it was a semi-matte because in my mind, I thought that it wouldn't be too drying. It claims to be: highly pigmented, a lightweight gel formula to make lips feel supple as well as soft, the gel cushions lips to make it comfortable with wear and that it is long lasting. There are 12 shades online in this specific formula to choose from. It retails on the Mary Kay website for $21 and there is a technology found inside the lipstick to blur the effect of any imperfections on the lips as well as optical enhancers to scatter the light. I do like the packaging with the clear top because I can quickly see the true shade of the lipstick bullet when I'm looking for a specific lipstick shade and the packaging in general is very sleek. There is a mild scent that I can't quite pinpoint but it's very pleasant.

You can find this product online at the Beauty Boutique, Hudson's Bay, TSC or on the Know Cosmetics website. I'm not sure about their in-store presence. It retails for $25 and you only get a little amount of product. It only contains 2 ingredients and it is made in the USA. This product is meant to be the final layer on your lips to seal that lipstick and keep it in place. It claims to help reduce fading, smudging and transferring. It is a transparent gel and it also claims to hydrate your lips underneath. Apparently it is not sticky, it's neutral in taste, it won't change the colour of your lip colour and it can pair well with any lipstick colour. The instructions are simple and you want to make sure that you shake the tube well before applying it onto your lips Before you do that though, it says to blot your lipstick lightly with a tissue, apply a generous amount of the topcoat, then wipe off the applicator and put it back into the tube. You need to wait a few minutes for it to dry and you can do the kiss test on your hand to make sure there is no residue visible that way, you will know that it's dry. You will want to reapply the topcoat with each fresh application of lipstick and it says especially after eating oily foods.

Overall Thoughts
I'll be honest and thought that this was a lot of work as well as a lot of money for such a small tube of product only containing 2 ingredients. You also have to make sure not to apply too much or it will start pilling. I personally wouldn't pay full price for the topcoat as you waste a lot of product on wiping off the applicator each time you put it back in the tube and it's an extra step. You also have to reapply it each time you put on a fresh coat of lipstick. As for the Mary Kay Lipstick, the colour was quite sheer and it ended up fading on me throughout the day almost completely. I will end up having to be heavy handed with the the lipstick and honestly, it isn't my favourite. I was planning on doing a before and after photo but it faded into nothing so there was no need to post the results. This duo lasted 5-6 hours on my lips.

Until next time,

STAY CLASSY
