3 Favourite Exfoliators for the Face

Hey everyone! There are many different kinds and forms of exfoliators on the market. Whether it is an exfoliator in stick form, or an enzyme powder in a jar or even a peeling gel that rolls away your dead skin. You want to exfoliate your skin after you cleanse it making it the second step in your skincare routine. I wanted to share with you my favourite ones that I have been testing out.

Tarte FRXXXTION Stick Exfoliating Cleanser - This retails for $29 CAD on the Sephora web site and you get 30 grams or 1 oz of product. I love the purple packaging and that it is a twist up! It is very easy to use and great for taking on the go! This is a 3-in-1 product because you can use it as: a cleanser, an exfoliator or as a mask if you choose to leave it on for longer. It is hypoallergenic, the stick is a gel, great for all all skin types and there is a rather cool ingredient inside called 'Fossilized Earth Microexfoliants.' To use it, you basically twist it up, apply it onto your face with the stick and then you massage it into your skin to really help exfoliate your face. It goes on black but it is not messy to use. This is a great product but it can get used up rather quickly so keep that in mind!

Peter Thomas Roth FirmX Peeling Gel - I actually featured this in a blog post where I spoke about a dupe for this exact product. I really like using it because you can actually see the dead skin rolling up on your face! It gets rid of the dead layer and leaves your skin feeling so soft! This came in the Skin Saver PTR Kit that you get get on the Sephora web site. For 100 ml of product or 3.4 oz, it retails for $60 CAD. This is honestly a unique product and these are a ton of enzymes in this product. It is great for all skin types and you can give yourself a little massage when you work the product into your skin! This is especially great to use in the colder months when your skin is dry and flaky.

Tatcha Polished Classic Rice Enzyme Powder - This is the most expensive one that I am going to share with you as it retails for $78 CAD on the Sephora site for 60 grams of product or 2.1 oz. This comes in a jar and it is a water activated enzyme powder. It helps get rid of any dead skin cells and leaves your skin feeling baby soft! This is best suited for normal and combination skin and is a great solution for those who have an uneven skin tone or uneven texture. It can also help if you have dull skin because this will make it more radiant and it is not harsh on the skin at all! This is dermatologist-tested, it does not irritate your skin, cruelty-free and there are many high quality ingredients inside. Even though I have oily skin, I still really enjoy using this enzyme powder to help exfoliate my skin! I purchased my smaller sized version on the Sephora web site for $32 CAD and it is called the 'Kyoto Cleanse.' It may be hard to see in the photo, but there is a small hole for the opening where the product comes out.

Just be advised that these are all smaller sized versions that I have to simply try-out the product. I have included the actual size of the full sized versions that you will receive if you do go ahead and purchase any one of these products.

A Potential Dupe for the Peter Thomas Roth FIRMx Peeling Gel

Hey everyone! Here is my breakdown on the information that I found online about the ELF Gentle Peeling Exfoliant vs Peter Thomas Roth FIRMx Peeling Gel (that I actually own.)

  • $60 CAD (based on the full size version of 100 ml)
  • 100 ml (3.4 fl oz) (full size)
  • Can purchase it at Sephora
  • For all skin types
  • Peeling Gel
  • Advised to use 1-3 times a week depending on how sensitive your skin is
  • $10 USD
  • 100 ml (3.4 fl oz)
  • Can purchase it on their web site
  • Doesn’t specify on which skin types that this can be used on
  • Doesn’t specify what the consistency is. It just says that it is an exfoliating cleanser.
  • Advised to use 2-3 times a week

Similarities:
It is recommended that you use both products on a dry face and you are to massage both in a circular motion. Both products are formulated without: Parabens, Sulfates or Phthalates. In terms of ingredients, both of these contain: Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Carbomer and Phenoxyethanol.

They have Cellulose and Glycol in both but I don’t know enough about them to speak on them but I believe there are different forms in each product. Each one has different fruit extracts in them. For example, PTR has Pineapple and Pomegranate Fruit Extract. There are multi-action enzymes and there is also keratinase inside. ELF has Papaya Leaf Extract as well as Tangerine Fruit Extract. It also claims in the description that there is Licorice Extract but I’m not sure which ingredient in the provided ingredient list that would be.

Differences:
PTR has Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Benzoate and Mica whereas the ELF one doesn’t have either. ELF has included Fragrance (Parfum) in their product without specifying which one specifically and PTR has not included any fragrance in their peeling gel. On the ELF web site, someone mentioned that the ingredient 'Microcrystalline Cellulose' is a biodegradable replacement for the polyethylene beads that were recently banned from: soaps, body washes, facial cleansers and toothpastes. These microbeads were proven to be harmful to our environment as well as our health. I remember reading an article about these microbeads being found in many aqua life forms and how toxic they really are.

Using The Peter Thomas Roth FIRMx Peeling Gel:

You will want to apply some product onto your dry face. I applied some onto my hand to show you.

You then will want to massage the product into your skin as mentioned above in circular motions. You will see the Peeling Gel ball up as it is exfoliating the skin and getting rid of the dead skin. You are left with a smooth layer of skin.

To Conclude:
The exfoliating cleanser by ELF just came out and I received an email about it yesterday. There is little information about this product online right now. Also, I do have a review & demo about an ELF product from this same line that you are welcome to check out.

I just want to mention that I do own the smaller size from Peter Thomas Roth (it came in the Skin Saver PTR Kit that was purchased on the web site,) but I do not yet own the Exfoliating Cleanser from ELF because it just recently came out.
